Pikes Peak International Hill Climb

Pikes Peak is a towering symbol of Colorado Springs. It comes to life every year for the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. Also known as the Race to the Clouds, this event brings many visitors to the city each year. In 2022, get ready for an extra special event, as this is the 100th running of the PPIHC. 

Fan Fest is also back this year in Downtown Colorado Springs on June 24, and the PPIHC will take place on June 26. It will be a fun weekend for residents and visitors.

Fan Fest

One of the largest street festivals in Colorado Springs, Fan Fest is presented by Michelob Ultra and Toyo Tires. More than 30,000 people are expected to fill 10-blocks of Downtown Colorado Springs to celebrate the PPIHC. The event will occur on Friday, June 24, 2022, from 5 PM to 9 PM, rain or shine.

There will be plenty to do and see. Here is the schedule of events:

  • 5 PM - The event opens to the public.
  • 5:30 PM - Demo practice by Nitro Circus Freestyle Motocross.
  • 6 PM to 7 PM - Fast 15 autograph session.
  • 6:30 PM - 1st 45-minute show by Nitro Circus Freestyle Motocross.
  • 8:15 PM - 2nd 45-minute show by Nitro Circus Freestyle Motocross.
  • 9 PM - The event ends for vendors and the public.

Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Schedule

Many of the events of the hill climb are open to the public. Some are free, and some require tickets. Tickets are sold online or at specific locations during race week. Some events are already sold out.

Monday, June 20 - Technical Inspection at the Broadmoor World Arena in Colorado Springs 

  • This takes place from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM and is free and open to the public. Merchandise sales will also be available. 

Tuesday, June 21: Practice and Qualifying Session on Pikes Peak

  • 4 AM to 5 AM - Gateway opens to spectators with tickets and credentialed individuals.
  • 4:45 AM - Official PPIHC start line closes to uphill traffic.
  • 4:30 AM to 8:30 AM - Merchandise is available for sale to spectators with daily tickets at the start line.
  • 5:30 AM to 8:30 AM - Practice and qualifying.
  • 9 AM - All spectators must be off the mountain.

Wednesday, June 22 - Practice and Qualifying Session on Pikes Peak

  • 4 AM to 5 AM - Gateway opens to spectators with tickets and credentialed individuals.
  • 4:45 AM - Official PPIHC start line closes to uphill traffic.
  • 4:30 AM to 8:30 AM - Merchandise is available for sale to spectators with daily tickets at the start line.
  • 5:30 AM to 8:30 AM - Practice and qualifying.
  • 9 AM - All spectators must be off the mountain.

Thursday, June 23 - Practice and Qualifying Session on Pikes Peak

  • 4 AM to 5 AM - Gateway opens to spectators with tickets and credentialed individuals.
  • 4:45 AM - Official PPIHC start line closes to uphill traffic.
  • 4:30 AM to 8:30 AM - Merchandise is available for sale to spectators with daily tickets at the start line.
  • 5:30 AM to 8:30 AM - Practice and qualifying.
  • 9 AM - All spectators must be off the mountain.

Friday, June 24 - PPIHC Sanctioned Optional Practice Day

  • 4 AM to 5 AM - Gateway opens to spectators with tickets and credentialed individuals.
  • 4:45 AM - Official PPIHC start line closes to uphill traffic.
  • 4:30 AM to 8:30 AM - Merchandise is available for sale to spectators with daily tickets at the start line.
  • 5:30 AM to 8:30 AM - Sanctioned Practice
  • 9 AM - All spectators must be off the mountain.
  • 5 PM to 9 PM - Fan Fest

Saturday, June 25 - Set-Up Day

  • 11 AM to 6 PM - Overnight camping opens on Pikes Peak
  • 6 PM - Gateway closes, and no more uphill traffic is allowed.

Sunday, June 26 - Race Day

  • 2:30 AM - Gateway opens for pre-purchased ticket holders. 
  • 5 AM - Start line closes to the public. No spectator vehicles are allowed past the official PPIHC start line.
  • 6 AM until event end - Merchandise is available at the start line. 
  • 7:30 AM - Green flag, the start of the 100th running.
  • 10 AM - Gateway closed to uphill traffic.
  • 5 PM - Estimated event end.

Below are ticket prices for the PPIHC. All “family pack” ticket holders must enter the Gateway in the same vehicle.

History of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb

In 2014, the Broadmoor Hotel completed the $3.5 million Pikes Peak Hill Climb Experience to the existing Penrose Heritage Museum. This experience is available free of charge. Visitors can view historic race cars, media, and memorabilia from this event. 

The Penrose Heritage Museum is located at 11 Lake Circle, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80906. The hours of operation are Tuesday through Saturday from 9 AM to 12 PM and 1 PM to 4 PM, and Sunday from 1 PM to 4 PM.
